Introduction
Moxa's products have been used in a number of maritime applications around the world. DNV certification, x86-based high performance CPUs, multiple connection options, network redundancy, and wide operating temperatures are imperative in maritime applications. In this application, a marine computer and an embedded computer integrate the ECDIS, conning, and radar systems on the bridge of a ship.
System Requirements
  • Multiple serial ports for connecting devices and sensors, and for network redundancy
  • x86-based high performance CPU to ensure better and more stable system performance
  • Central computer as a controller for retrieving data from the control room
  • Stable and high performance marine computer to integrate various maritime systems
  • Marine display with dynamic full-dimming control function (preferable for marine applications)
  • DNV certification
  • Moxa Solution
Moxa's MC-4510-C23 marine computer and the MD-220W marine display can be integrated with the MPC-220W-C23 marine panel PC, which not only collects data from the DA-682 embedded computer but also allows navigators to control and operate the radar system, conning system (the centralized navigation data display for the ship's command), and the ECDIS (Electronic Chart Display and Information System), a navigation information system for displaying the information from electronic navigational charts (ENC) and integrating data from the Global Positioning System (GPS) and other navigational sensors.

Moxa's DA-682 serves as a central controller located on the bridge. It controls and retrieves data from the V481 embedded computer located in the control room via the IKS-6726 managed Ethernet switch. The DA-682 is a reliable, high performance x86-based embedded computer with a rich variety of I/O interfaces. The multiple connection options can connect to temperature sensors, pressure sensors, and meters, with extra serial ports available for network redundancy.
    Why Moxa?
  • Eight 3-in-1 (RS-232/422/485) serial ports in one embedded box for communications and network redundancy
  • Both Moxa embedded computers and marine panel PCs feature an x86-based high performance CPU to ensure better and more stable system performance
  • Moxa's x86-based industrial computers are cable-free and do not use a hard drive for greater reliability
  • Modular docking design: The marine computer and marine display use a modular design for greater versatility
  • Marine display with dynamic full-dimming control function
  • The DA-682 has a modular design and 2 PCI slots for inserting expansion modules
  • DNV certified
